Would a mid table La Liga team win the Championship?

This is more a thought experiment than a serious proposition but......

Excluding the recently relegated teams with their gargantuan payrolls the promotion chasing Championship clubs seem to operate with wage bills in the £25-40m per annum range.

The non-elite teams in La Liga have wage bills in the £25m-£40m a year range.

To pick random pairings Celta Vigo and Derby County both spend around £36m a year on wages.

Don't mention we get paid more than Fiorentina please.

Celta Vigo are better than Derby County though aren't they? I don't think many would disagree.

OK, for another example Eibar are better than Blackburn Rovers with around a £27m spend.

So we agree the Spanish La Liga midtable team would almost certainly be better than a Championship team?

I'd hope at this stage everyone would still be agreeing. Certainly English performances in the Europa League seem to indicate that mid table Premier League clubs seem to struggle against European opposition.

Ah but you say, playing the devil's advocate as usual,  the Spanish game and the English game are different beasts. You can't compare the blood and thunder of a muddy pitch in some northern town in midwinter to all that flip flop wearing, tippy tappy stuff they play over there. They'd get eaten alive.

You continue...Aspas looks good in Spain but he failed at Liverpool. Remember that corner!?

I think we'd all agree some players suit some styles better than others. And probably that the climate and off the pitch culture mean some players settle better in an area, which probably does have an impact on how they perform on the pitch.

So what would happen if a magic fairy flicked her wand and simply made a wholesale swap, with Derby County players and staff finding themselves on the Galician coast and various bewildered Spaniards trying to work out what "Ay up me duck" means?

Would Derby County survive in La Liga?

Would Celta Vigo get promoted?

We beat Barcelona but I'm not sure we could beat Preston.

There is no real way of knowing.

I don't think it is inconceivable that Derby would survive.

I think Celta Vigo would almost certainly win promotion.

Promotion now being worth around £200m in guaranteed prize money.

It was reported that the last Nottingham Forest owner invested nearly £80m in failed attempts to seek promotion. That kind of money would buy a controlling share in most clubs in Europe.

For reference the Derby County wage bill was the same as Fiorentina and Sampdoria and £10m more than Atalanta.

Will we ever see this model of wholesale replacement of players and staff tried out for a promotion push?

It would be fascinating to see if it worked.
